About MIRROR Mentorship Program

The MIRROR Mentorship program exists to broaden development opportunities and industry access for talented artists who come from historically marginalised communities and who are developing literary work for children and young people (0-14 years) for publication in English and in languages other than English (bilingual works).

The MIRROR Mentorship recognises the factors that exclude literary artists from seeing themselves reflected on Australian bookshelves. When one in five families in Australia speak a language other than English at home (and growing!), MIRROR is an exciting opportunity to give children and young people better access to stories that reflect the linguistic diversity of the Australian reading public.

Celebrating Industry Day

As part of the mentorship program, we organise two industry days to promote strong connections between the emerging artists and the industry they hope to join.

The MIRROR Industry Day was a gift for the MIRROR mentees and industry veterans alike.

It generated new sectoral analysis and courageous thinking about the role of Australian artists in international markets.

MIRROR partners, Scribble, hosted at their offices in Brunswick where we welcomed leading players in the kidslit industry including:

Literary agents, Jacinta Di Mase and Naomi Perry (Gildings)
Illustrators, Dinalie Dabarera and Myo Yim
Booksellers, Tamuz Ellazam (Readings Kids) and Michael Earp (The Little Bookroom), and
Riso Printer and project partner, Ashely Ronning (Helio Press).

We welcomed two Mandarin interpreters to support full participation.

Mirror’s Publisher, Miriam Rosenbloom (and Art Director, Guy Ivison who was sick on the day) and Think+DO Tank Foundation’s CEO, Jane Stratton, and Literary Program Producer, Rosario Lázaro Igoa were excited to co-host the day.
